AREDS 2 and PreserVision: What the Research Actually Says About Eye Supplements

AREDS 2 gets talked about a lot, but it’s worth understanding what it actually is — because it’s not a magic “better eyesight” pill, and anyone selling it as one isn’t being straight with you. If your optician has mentioned AREDS 2, or you’ve heard the name and want to understand what it actually is, this is the proper breakdown.

A bit of history

AREDS stands for the Age-Related Eye Disease Study, a large clinical trial sponsored by the US National Eye Institute. The first AREDS study, published in 2001, looked at whether a specific combination of vitamins and minerals could slow the progression of age-related macular degeneration — AMD, the leading cause of significant vision loss in older adults in the UK and elsewhere. The original formula included high-dose vitamin C, vitamin E, beta-carotene, zinc and copper.

The results were genuinely significant. The study showed roughly a 25% reduction in the risk of progression to advanced AMD over five years in people who already had intermediate or advanced disease in one or both eyes. That’s not “perfect vision restored” — but in a condition with very limited treatment options, a clinically meaningful slowdown was big news.

So why AREDS 2?

Two reasons. First, beta-carotene at the high doses used in AREDS 1 turned out to be linked to an increased risk of lung cancer in current and former smokers — a real safety issue that needed addressing. Second, researchers wanted to test whether two carotenoids found in healthy retinas, lutein and zeaxanthin, might do the same protective job more safely. The second study, AREDS 2 (published 2013), swapped out the beta-carotene for lutein and zeaxanthin, and that’s the formula most opticians now recommend.

What’s in the AREDS 2 formula

  • Vitamin C (500mg) and Vitamin E (400 IU) — antioxidants that may help protect retinal cells from oxidative stress.
  • Lutein (10mg) and Zeaxanthin (2mg) — pigments that concentrate in the macula and filter harmful blue light.
  • Zinc (80mg or 25mg in the lower-zinc version) — supports retinal enzyme function. The dose is high, which is why a doctor’s input matters.
  • Copper (2mg) — included to prevent the copper deficiency that high-dose zinc can otherwise cause.

The Bausch + Lomb PreserVision AREDS 2 product is the formula matched to that study — same nutrients, same doses, made by the same company that was involved in the original research. That’s why it’s the version your optician most likely had in mind.

The honest caveats

AREDS 2 isn’t shown to prevent AMD in people who don’t have it. If you have perfectly healthy eyes and no family history, taking it as a “just in case” supplement isn’t well supported by the evidence. It also won’t reverse vision you’ve already lost — the benefit is slowing further progression, not undoing damage. And the doses involved are properly therapeutic, not gentle multivitamin levels, so you genuinely should talk to your optician or GP before starting, especially if you’re a smoker, on other supplements, or have any underlying health conditions.

It’s also worth knowing that “eye health” multivitamins on UK shelves often contain a few of the AREDS 2 ingredients at much lower doses, alongside a long list of other nutrients. Those aren’t the same product. If a clinician has specifically recommended AREDS 2, they mean the AREDS 2 formula at AREDS 2 doses — not a vague eye-vitamin mix that happens to include some lutein.

What we can help with is access. Genuine Bausch + Lomb PreserVision AREDS 2 is surprisingly awkward to source in the UK at a fair price, which is exactly why we started importing it directly. Real product, US packaging, UK stock, no customs surprises.

Important: this post is general information, not medical advice. Always check with your optician, GP or pharmacist before starting any supplement, particularly one with active doses like AREDS 2.
